Volkswagen/PDF Exercise

During this class, you will create three PDF files based on your recently-designed Volkswagen Ad. The goal of this exercise is to create PDF files which are appropriate for either download, laser printing or for press.

The Process

Prepare your InDesign Document

  • Open your InDesign document containing your Volkswagen Ad.
  • Go to the Links palette and make sure all links are ok.
  • If not, re-link images to the document.
  • Make sure you have all the original fonts loaded.

Create an EPS file

  • Export your document as an EPS: Go File >Export. From the Format pop-up menu, choose "EPS".
  • Select "Desktop" as a location to save the file. Click Export.
  • In the resulting dialog, you'll have to check "Spreads". Only export pages 2-3. Make sure your bleeds are set to 0p9.
  • Click "Export".
  • Close the InDesign document

Create Three PDF files

  1. Screen-Ready PDF
    • Set Distiller's "Default Settings" pop-up menu to "Smallest File Size"
    • Drag the EPS file from the Desktop to the Distiller window (in the well area)
    • Distiller will create a screen-ready PDF file on the desktop.
  2. Print-Ready PDF
    • Rename your EPS file to High Quality Print.
    • Set Distiller's "Default Settings" pop-up menu to "High Quality Print"
    • Drag the EPS file from the Desktop to the Distiller window (in the well area)
    • Distiller will create a laser-ready (or ink-jet) PDF file on the desktop.
  3. Press-Ready PDF
    • Rename your EPS file to Press Quality.
    • Set Distiller's "Default Settings" pop-up menu to "Press Quality"
    • Drag the EPS file from the Desktop to the Distiller window (in the well area)
    • Distiller will create a press-ready PDF file on the desktop.

When you are done, create a new folder named your name. Place your PDF files in it. Drop it in my Drop Box.

Remember to name your PDF files:

  1. "Smallest File Size.pdf"
  2. "High Quality Print.pdf"
  3. "Press Quality.pdf"
