Set Your Preferences:
Before your start your Map, make sure to go to your Illustrator Preferences and select "Scale Strokes & Effects".
Map Design
You will design a geographical map using Illustrator. You will do so with paths, symbols & graphic styles amongst other tools. The goal of the game is to use the tools you have learned this semester to design and build your map.
Project Highlights
- This project is worth 20% of your final grade.
- During this exercise, you will design a map using most of the Illustrator tools and techniques you have learned this semester.
- This project is due when you get back from the break for groups 410 & 430 with Alain. March 6th for group 420 with Greg
Description
- The dimensions of the map can vary. The largest sheet should be 12" X 18". The smallest area of the actual map should be 11" X 11".
- Build your file in a "CMYK" document.
- You will need to find a novel, imaginative title for your map.
- You must build a legend to explain the different symbols on the map.
- You can draw a frame around your map, or have the edges fade or simply end at an arbitrary place.
- You are not allowed placed raster images
- You must organize your work in a logical fashion on Layers
- If it helps, build different elements in different documents. Assemble elements at the end into one document. I'd like to see them all. Organize working files in a folder named "Working Files"
- You may use the balance of the page to include a title and other information about the area in your map. You are free to make your presentation original. You should check with me before deviating too much.
Illustrator features you must use:
- Layers
- Pathfinder or Shape Builder Tool
- Clipping Masks
- Appearances & Graphic Styles
- Patterns
|
- Blends
- Type on a Path
- Symbols
- Brushes
|
You must use at least one instance of each of these features in your project.
File Prep — THIS IS IMPORTANT
Before you hand in your file, please make sure you do the following.
- Go to your various palettes' flyout menus. Choose Select All Unused. Delete unused items in the palette. This includes swatches, symbols, brushes, graphic styles and more.
- Do not lock any layers.
- Place scraps of artwork on a hidden layer.
- Mask your artwork. If you have artwork which touches the edges of the page, it must bleed 0p9 (1/8"). Don't go any further than that. If your artwork is much larger than the page, make a mask at the bleed line.
- Go "Type>Find Font" to make absolutely sure which fonts you have in your document. Find any unused fonts and delete them from your artwork.
- Go to your Links palette to see if you have any place images. Your links palette must be blank.
Deliverables
- Your native Illustrator file.
- A PDF of your map.
- Your fonts.
- No placed images, since you're not supposed to have any in your project.
- Any support documents you wish to provide.
- Don't write 4X0, for heaven's sake! Enter your actual group number. Sheesh.
