The Project Plan

This exercise will entail using the magazine project in Andrea’s Typography class. You will treat it as a real contract, and Andrea as a real client. You will need to keep track of time & costs incurred. It will be based on a Project Plan Form you will adapt and fill in.

About the Project Plan Document

Long term, complex projects must be tracked regularly to ensure that time and expenses are not exceeding the original budget.

When adding or deleting columns or rows, make sure the formulas still work.

Not every single field in the form is necessary. Avoid filling out forms in a compulsive manner. This can often lead to unnecessary complexity and work.

To avoid confusion, delete items under the scope of work which are not applicable to this specific project.

The term “in-house” applied to tasks which are done within the design studio. For items such as photocopies, you may group them together as one item. Sometimes, itemizing in too much detail only invites scrutiny on the part of the client.

When tasks are performed in-house, they represent a significant savings to the client. These saving can be passed along, at least in part, to the client. You should, however, keep some of those savings to cover the cost of equipment and its servicing. It is not un-ethical to make a profit on in-house tasks when some saving are passed along to the client.

The Process

You should keep copies of this form on letter-sized sheets to mark-up every day you work on the project.

You’ll need to identify the elements of the form which will be used for your specific project.

You will personalize the forms with your design firm’s corporate identity (logo, address info, etc...).

You will hand in three tabloid-sized black & white lasers in a properly identified envelope.
