Canada Post Project

We will work with Canada Post to develop new anti-graffiti graphics for their mail boxes.

Project Highlights

  • This project is worth 20% of your final grade.
  • It is due at the start of class xx.
  • You'll design wraps to cover Canada Post Street Mailboxes.

Further Thoughts

Think of the client. Go to canadapost.ca. See where the company is headed. There seems to be a strong environmental push. There also seems to be a move towards a modern, wired Canada Post. They're not pushing back against e-mail and other competitive forces, they're playing ball. They are partnered with eBay to be their Official Carrier.

  • research canadian icons
  • avoid stereotypes
  • consider the locations of the SMBs
  • if you use a stereotype, represent it in a novel fashion
  • consider: what surface would you never dare tag?
  • The surface of the box is a bit irregular, so avoid detail
  • What does Canada Post represent to you?
  • Your design should not promote any company, other than Canada Post. And even at that, it shouldn't be blatant advertising. Make it subtle.

Deliverables

DesignSchoo.ca : Graphic Design Five : Canada Post Project format

You are free to create your project the way you want, with the software you want. Even if your project is interactive, the minimum required is a tabloid sheet in landscape or portraid orientation. Even if you have created an interactive presentation, you should have produced a visual of your mailbox, which can be used on this sheet. The sheet should include depictions of your mailbox from all four sides. The top is optional. Show it if there's something important to see there.

Treat this as a sell sheet. It should be fairly quick to make. It's a quick handout that you could pass around the board room table to pitch your concept. It includes a short description of your concept, along with photos..

Please include any research which demonstrates your thought progress in an envelope with your printed piece. The dimensions of the envelope don't matter. Please make sure it's properly identified.

Electronic files for your presentation must be uploaded to my drop box. I'm not specifically grading their assembly. This is not a software course. They are simply for viewing. They can be PDF, InDesign, Flash, or any other self-contained format an non-interactive guy can watch on his meagre MacBook Pro.

How to Get an A

This project is a combination of conceptual thinking, problem solving and skillful execution.

Research & Concept (50%)
Let's try to dig a lot deeper. I'm not going to tell you a specific number of pages of research I want from you. You should exhaust all avenues. You should only settle on an idea after you have really exhausted all possibilities. Take your time. Write, draw, research online. Think. Think. Think.
This grade represents the depth and richness of your idea. This project is about concept. The execution matters, but the idea is central.
Final Project (50%)
The final product you will produce will be the embodiment of your research. Come up with a novel way to represent it. Plan, then execute accurately and clearly.
This breaks down into presentation and execution. You want to have a novel way to represent your idea, and you want it to be clean and well assembled. This is not a software course. I am not grading the tools you've used to design your piece; only the result of the work.
